Few days ago I heard very sad news that the Kuwaiti concept The Kind Ones closed their Los Angeles branch. The founders are very brave to open in California in the first place, and I respect them for that. The Kind Ones is successful in Kuwait, so I hope the founders the best of luck.
I have been going to Muharraq Skewers for the past few months. Honestly, it is the best mix grill restaurant in Kuwait. The food is always fresh and the meat is always juicy and tender. The restaurant is located in Salmiya and it is a very small restaurant and always full. The only time I go and find a table instantly is when they first open but from 7:30 or 8:00 PM, it takes around 1 hour to get a table. I use an app called Requeue to be in line so I don’t have to wait outside the store. Let me share what I usually order from Muharraq Skewers
1- Bahrini Tikka (Marinated with Loomi)
Just order the mentioned items and for sure you will be more than happy.
The battle between Carriage and Deliveroo has been going on for sometime. I personally use Talabat, Carriage, and Deliveroo. My favorite one is Deliveroo because of the superior customer service. Even though Deliveroo is my favorite app, I can’t use it that much. The main reason of why I use Carriage more than Deliveroo is the option to write notes for each item I order. At the Duwaneyah, I usually order food for 10+ people, and each person customize his order differently. For example we order from Fat Burger, I will get a request saying I don’t want onions in my burger. The other want extra mayo and so on. The problem is that I can’t add any notes to the items I order on Deliveroo. When I use Carriage I have the luxury to write down a note for each item, and that’s why I still use Carriage more than Deliveroo. This case applies to all my friends at the Duwaneyah and all of us are forced to use Carriage instead.
I hope Deliveroo update their app to include such feature. If they do, they will be much more competitive.
Whether you live in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, UAE, or Saudi Arabia. There is one way to really experience the right taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I realized this is a very common mistake in Kuwait where people go and order the fried chicken bucket at KFC and since they are in a rush, they get the pieces that are in the heating oven. Most of the time, the chicken in the oven is dry and not as crunchy.
“Try my method that has been working for many years”
First go to your favorite branch of KFC (My favorite is Daiya), park your car and go inside the store. Order the spicy fried chicken bucket of 9, 15, or 21 pieces. Ask the cashier to make a new batch and he will tell you that it will take between 20 to 25 minutes. Tell the cashier that you don’t mind the wait and sit on a chair until it is ready. Either eat it at the store or go home within 15 minutes. Once you have your first bite, you will experience the taste, crunchiness, and hotness of each fried chicken piece. Once you try my method, you will never go back to eating the old way. This is what fried chicken suppose to taste like
Yesterday a relative of mine was shocked because of the amazing taste, especially that he has been eating KFC since he was a kid, but it never tasted this way before. Now he likes it more than ever even though he has always been a fan of KFC.
In Kuwait, it is very common to see Shawarma being served in weddings, companies events, and gatherings. It is the most critical menu item for any event even if there is big selection of buffet menu. Whenever I go to a wedding, I see people gathering around the Shawarma, which makes me want to congratulate the groom ASAP and go to eat the Shawarma. The most common way to motivate the guys to go to a wedding is reminding them that there will be Shawarma at the wedding.
On the 29th of November 2019 National Union of Kuwaiti Students held an event in Marriott Marquis in San Diego, CA. The NUKS Expo Marina Edition was an outdoor event where they had multiple restaurants, coffee shops, and dessert concepts.
The event was really amazing, and the students were really happy. Concepts such as Afters, Vivace Pizza, and Kanafeh Cafe made the event fun.
The line was so long, the longest I have ever seen at any of Nuks events. Students were waiting in line from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM, so a total of 4 hours. The event was stopped by the hotel for exceeding operational hours, or else the restaurant would have continued serving and the students to stand in line. According Simsim Chef Ibrahim AlSharief, he processed around 1,600 – 1,750 Shawarmas, which is a very big number.
As usual NUKS does a great job managing the events. I look forward to next year, and definitely you will find me next to the Shawarma.
I love eating fatayer for breakfast, and for a long time. My very favorite fatayer bakery was Swiss Corner in Dahia Abdullah Alsalem, but sadly they closed down few months ago. I heard of Simsim, but for me it was good, but now wow. I was searching for the next wow fatayer bakery in Kuwait, and today I found the one. Finding Ajeen bakery was like finding a gold mine and today was my first time trying Ajeen. I ordered Zataar, labneh, Akaawi, and pizza. The beauty about Ajeen is that their fatayer is very light on the stomach, and it is thin and tasty. My very favorite one was the pizza, Akaawi, and then the Labneh. The location of Ajeen is a prime location, and it is located in Fatoosh at Faiha Co-op. I highly recommend trying Ajeen, and trust me, you will never be disappointed because it is the best fatayer pastries in Kuwait.
I can’t wait for my next visit to San Diego this year. I miss the weather, shopping malls, driving, and the food. Now I will share my top 5 things to do in San Diego.
1- Simsim Outstanding Shawarma : Simsim has been my very favorite place for lunch and dinner from last year, and the chef behind the concept is really talented. My favorite items are the Simsim Shawarma, Fatteh Shawarma, Lemonade, and the Mahalabiya. When you order the Simsim Shawarma, make sure to get some extra garlic sauce on side to dip the sandwich in.
2- Bobboi Gelato : It is located in La Jolla, CA. One of the best Gelatos I have ever had in the US and my favorite flavor was the Meditteraneo. The ratio of pistachios to almonds is perfect and the flavor is really amazing.
3- Fashion Valley : This shopping mall has always been one of the best in Socal. It is nice to walk outside in San Diego’s nice weather. I usually go and grab either Pinkberry or Haagen Daz and walk around. Fashion Valley is the most luxury mall in San Diego and it is the perfect place to go shopping.
4- San Diego Zoo and Sea World : To enjoy time with the family, both San Diego Zoo and Sea World are perfect. The things you see usually excite me and my family. The best thing in San Diego Zoo is the baby panda.
5- El Pescador Fish Market & Restaurant : This is the best sea food restaurant in San Diego. I usually get the grilled shrimp sandwich with avocados. I also get the grilled Halibut sandwich.
Hectare’s has been innovating like crazy. When they first released their product, it set a total new standard in Kuwait. I personally didn’t know what will come next, and since it is a new company, I wasn’t sure what they will do next. Usually the companies in Kuwait, they launch a product and then have the same products for decades. That wasn’t the case with Hectare’s where they released their first set of chips and popcorn products then few months later they released the pack of 6. I haven’t seen such thing before, so it was really amazing. Now they came up with a new flavor, the Malt Vinegar. I can’t wait to try it out and I heard that there are other products that will disrupt the industry because of their uniqueness. Quality, taste, and innovation is what Hectare’s is delivering to the industry.
This is something I personally didn’t know about, but it seems my family do. Few days ago, I was searching for an amazing soft serve ice cream to eat for dessert. I am personally used to eat soft serve ice cream at Mcdonald’s, which I still like a lot. I was told to try Whipped few months ago, but when I ordered it, I wasn’t very happy due to the color of their ice cream. They use blue color for their vanilla ice cream, which I didn’t like, because I wasn’t to avoid food color. The taste is great, and they have great toppings. My brother told me to go try Dairy Queen and it has been my family’s favorite for a very long time. I didn’t know much about it, because I was young when their branch was in Abdullah Alsalem back in the day. I have vague memories of them serving a banana split with ice cream. The day I tried Dairy Queen soft serve, I realized that it is one of the best soft serves I’ve had in my life. It is colder and harder than the the usual soft serves from other stores. I enjoyed every bite of it, and from now on I rank Dairy Queen soft serve in my top 3 list for soft serves in Kuwait.
I spent my summer vacation in the US in both Irvine and Carmel, California. I was driving around mostly to San Diego and sometimes Los Angeles since there isn’t much to do in Irvine. This year was the most interesting year in the US, and especially for food. I read on reddit that there are 3 restaurants that has Kuwaiti partners somehow and two of them are in Los Angeles, and one in San Diego. I couldn’t manage to go to the ones in Los Angeles, but I will definitely try The Kind Ones in Kuwait. I am used to RHS since it was under our office, but sadly they closed down.
Now lets talk about simsim outstanding shawarma, which is located in San Diego, California. This is the best and tastiest shawarma in San Diego and most Kuwaitis are saying the same thing. It is really really tasty, and one of a kind. The menu consist of shawarmas, bowls, and sides. It is a fast casual concept, which means it has a focused and simple menu to prepare the items while walking through the line. It is a concept very similar to Chipotle but serving shawarma instead of burrito. My very favorite items on the menu are the following
Simsim Shawarma : Chicken & Pomegranate
Daring Shawarma : Meat & Tomato Sauce
Feta Shawarma : Half Chicken & Half Meat
My Own Combo Bowl : Half Chicken with Bulgur & Half Meat with Rice and Tomato Sauce all over
Sides : Hummus & Baba Ghanouj
Whenever I go to simsim, I see mostly Kuwaitis and Saudis eating there. The food is really impressive overall, and if I visit again, I am definitely going there to eat more of simsim. I believe that this shawarma place is the best in San Diego, and it will disrupt the restaurant industry in the US because of of taste and design.
