Retail Recession in Kuwait

Things haven’t been that good when it comes to retail in Kuwait. From stores in the avenues to the stores in Hawalli, the retail industry is changing big time. Last week, we had some goods at Kuwait customs and when we went there it wasn’t as busy as it used to be in the past. We asked around and the labor there were complaining that imports have decreased so much and it keeps decreasing. The trucks that transports goods were charging 25 KD per trip and now they are charging 10 KD only. I have discussed this issue with multiple business owners and they mostly blame the changes in the industry.

Al-Rehab Complex: Multiple business owners that I know very well complained how their customers changed the way they purchase video games. When it comes to software, they purchase online from Playstation Network, Nintendo eShop, Xbox Games Store. Even if someone wants the collector’s edition, they buy it from Amazon. The problem even the most loyal customers to Al-Rehab Complex stopped going there and they started to buy online. Buying directly from Amazon for collector’s edition games is cheaper than buying from Al-Rehab Complex.

The Avenues: The Avenues has the highest foot traffic in Kuwait, but for the past 2.5 years. You see constant sales going on. I am surprised to see Sales going on for that long, but it isn’t stopping at all and I don’t think it will stop anytime soon. Business owners are blaming the leave of expats families, reduction in purchase power, and purchasing online from stores overseas.

Ibn Khaldoun St: Even the silicon valley of Kuwait have been hit big time. I talked to multiple business owners and their main problem is that people are buying from Amazon. Of course people will buy from Amazon, they offer lower prices and very fast deliveries. I am getting my stuff within 3-4 days, which is extremely fast for a shipment coming from the US. The stores in Kuwait can’t compete with Amazon since Amazon have a very large economy of scale.
The trend will continue where retail will suffer and online purchases will increase. Retail recession has started few years ago, but lets see how 2020 goes.

Muharraq Skewers | The Best Mix Grill Restaurant in Kuwait

I have been going to Muharraq Skewers for the past few months. Honestly, it is the best mix grill restaurant in Kuwait. The food is always fresh and the meat is always juicy and tender. The restaurant is located in Salmiya and it is a very small restaurant and always full. The only time I go and find a table instantly is when they first open but from 7:30 or 8:00 PM, it takes around 1 hour to get a table. I use an app called Requeue to be in line so I don’t have to wait outside the store. Let me share what I usually order from Muharraq Skewers

1- Bahrini Tikka (Marinated with Loomi)

2- Hearts

3- Arayes

4- Kebab

5- Hummus

Just order the mentioned items and for sure you will be more than happy.

Why Do We Still Order From Carriage Over Deliveroo

The battle between Carriage and Deliveroo has been going on for sometime. I personally use Talabat, Carriage, and Deliveroo. My favorite one is Deliveroo because of the superior customer service. Even though Deliveroo is my favorite app, I can’t use it that much. The main reason of why I use Carriage more than Deliveroo is the option to write notes for each item I order. At the Duwaneyah, I usually order food for 10+ people, and each person customize his order differently. For example we order from Fat Burger, I will get a request saying I don’t want onions in my burger. The other want extra mayo and so on. The problem is that I can’t add any notes to the items I order on Deliveroo. When I use Carriage I have the luxury to write down a note for each item, and that’s why I still use Carriage more than Deliveroo. This case applies to all my friends at the Duwaneyah and all of us are forced to use Carriage instead.

I hope Deliveroo update their app to include such feature. If they do, they will be much more competitive.

How To Eat KFC The Right and Perfect Way

Whether you live in Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, UAE, or Saudi Arabia. There is one way to really experience the right taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken. I realized this is a very common mistake in Kuwait where people go and order the fried chicken bucket at KFC and since they are in a rush, they get the pieces that are in the heating oven. Most of the time, the chicken in the oven is dry and not as crunchy.

“Try my method that has been working for many years”

First go to your favorite branch of KFC (My favorite is Daiya), park your car and go inside the store. Order the spicy fried chicken bucket of 9, 15, or 21 pieces. Ask the cashier to make a new batch and he will tell you that it will take between 20 to 25 minutes. Tell the cashier that you don’t mind the wait and sit on a chair until it is ready. Either eat it at the store or go home within 15 minutes. Once you have your first bite, you will experience the taste, crunchiness, and hotness of each fried chicken piece. Once you try my method, you will never go back to eating the old way. This is what fried chicken suppose to taste like

Yesterday a relative of mine was shocked because of the amazing taste, especially that he has been eating KFC since he was a kid, but it never tasted this way before. Now he likes it more than ever even though he has always been a fan of KFC.

Carrefour is Finally on Tons Grocery App in Kuwait

Tons has been rising as the best grocery app in Kuwait since they started. They keep updating their application with killer features and UI/UX to enhance usability. I never thought that Tons app will be that popular in a very short time in Kuwait. The main challenge with all grocery companies in Kuwait is that the app and website aren’t connected to the inventory. It means that whatever you order might be there and it might not be, and they select a replacement for you. Tons app made that much easier than all the other apps, but still it is annoying. Now with Carrefour, Tons is being connected to Carrefour inventory, which will remove all that hassle as soon as they finish from the integration. I will be much happier as a customer, because I don’t want to think about product replacement anymore.

Carrefour is planning for the future, and if others doesn’t catch up. They will be way ahead of everyone.

Why is Shawarma The Most Popular Food at Events & Weddings

In Kuwait, it is very common to see Shawarma being served in weddings, companies events, and gatherings. It is the most critical menu item for any event even if there is big selection of buffet menu. Whenever I go to a wedding, I see people gathering around the Shawarma, which makes me want to congratulate the groom ASAP and go to eat the Shawarma. The most common way to motivate the guys to go to a wedding is reminding them that there will be Shawarma at the wedding.

On the 29th of November 2019 National Union of Kuwaiti Students held an event in Marriott Marquis in San Diego, CA. The NUKS Expo Marina Edition was an outdoor event where they had multiple restaurants, coffee shops, and dessert concepts.

The event was really amazing, and the students were really happy. Concepts such as Afters, Vivace Pizza, and Kanafeh Cafe made the event fun.

The concept that made a huge buzz was Simsim Outstanding Shawarma where they were serving chicken Shawarma. Of course I know Simsim since the day they opened, but others didn’t know it. The buzz comes back to why Shawarma is the most popular food in events and it held true even for our students in the US.

The line was so long, the longest I have ever seen at any of Nuks events. Students were waiting in line from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM, so a total of 4 hours. The event was stopped by the hotel for exceeding operational hours, or else the restaurant would have continued serving and the students to stand in line. According Simsim Chef Ibrahim AlSharief, he processed around 1,600 – 1,750 Shawarmas, which is a very big number.

As usual NUKS does a great job managing the events. I look forward to next year, and definitely you will find me next to the Shawarma.

Le Parfait | The Best Natural & Organic Soap in Kuwait

I am a big fan of natural soaps, and my favorite soap has always been Lush. I usually buy Citrus Lemon-lime at Lush, but they only sell it for a limited time every year. I tried soaps from difference places such as the Lebanese House, and imported soaps from Turkey. In my opinion Lush is the best in terms of soap quality and smell, but the soap only last for few days of my usage. Few weeks ago, I found a new company creating extremely high quality soap and it is made in Kuwait. The company called Le Parfait and they use the highest quality ingredients in their soap. I couldn’t believe that they use that much of expensive ingredients in their soap, and they use them without adding fillers so they serve the highest quality possible.

When I tried Le Parfait soap, I loved the ingredients, the smell, and I was surprised by how long it last. The soap last about 3 of my usage. At Le Parfait they sell the following types of soap.

  • Myrrh Soap
  • Activated Charcoal Soap
  • Goat Milk Soap
  • Oatmeal & Honey Soap
  • Papaya Soap
  • Shea Butter Soap

The prices are so inexpensive, and I am really willing to pay more for the quality and ingredients that I am getting. Now Le Parfait is my very soap company, and before every trip. I take Le Parfait soap with me from Kuwait.

So far my very favorite one is the Myrrh soap, but I haven’t used them all so far because they last much longer than expected. I am very happy to see Kuwaitis creating high quality factories, and I personally call that level Swiss quality.

You can order Le Parfait products from their website and don’t also forget to follow them on instagram

Waiting For Zain 5G Offer Via Call

Some of my friends have been getting calls from Zain for 5G offers. The offer is really amazing and I can’t wait to get a call to get that offer. The offer is 17.5 KD for 600 GB + 5G Router. The commitment is for 2 years as usual, and the speeds that my friends are getting are around 280 MB. This offer isn’t available at stores, and Zain has to call to get that offer.

Shrimpy | Best Fried Shrimp in Kuwait for 2019

The first time I tried Shrimpy when a friend of mine ordered Shrimpy for our gathering at the Duwaneya. When I tried it, it was good, but nothing impressive. In general food taste so different when you eat it fresh at the store vs via delivery. The second time was when my prospective completely changed about Shrimpy. I was at McDonald’s in AlNuzha, but it was so busy and I didn’t feel like to wait. I decided to go somewhere else, so I saw Shrimpy very close to it. I went there and ordered fried shrimp monster size with coke. I got my order right from the fryer and the color was the perfect golden color. I had my first shrimp with tartar sauce, and it was amazing. Since that day, I am a fan of Shrimpy, but I always go to their branch in AlNuzha and have it there.
